Vacuum therapy (VAC therapy) is a form of wound treatment for acute and chronic open wounds. The aim is to achieve reliable and rapid wound healing in the affected animal.
In vacuum therapy the open wound is covered with an airtight film. An attached electrical or mechanical pump generates a local negative pressure and sucks out wound secretion, thereby cleaning the wound and stimulating the animal’s circulation. Budding of new blood vessels and development of new tissue are encouraged subsequently. Since the system is sealed airtight, the dressing can remain on the wound for several days and no odours or wound secretions escape.
Vacuum therapy achieves gratifying success in animals with extensive or deep contaminated wounds, following skin grafts or after operations to relieve tension at the suture site.
