In cats, the weekly administration of a progestogen-containing preparation in tablet form or the injection of a progestogen at intervals of 3-5 months can effectively prevent the cat from going into heat.

Treatment should start in early spring between two heats.
Progestogens inhibit production of FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinising hormone) in the brain and thus hormonal activity in the ovaries and uterus, thereby preventing heat.

These interventions in hormone metabolism are not without side effects so they are not suitable for long-term use.
